Rep. Walsh receives award for supporting youth, families

Rep. Maureen Walsh, R-Walla Walla, was presented with the Boys and Girls Clubs Washington Alliance 2014 Legislative Champion award in recognition of her work in support of Washington families and youth. Walsh was one of four legislators to be recognized this year.

“In my ten years as a state representative I have gotten much feedback about our youth services and programs. It's important to me that the Legislature supports policies that encourage youth to learn and interact in safe environments so they can be healthy, productive citizens,” said Walsh. “I'm incredibly proud of the work we have accomplished on behalf of families and children and look forward to advocating for more healthy communities in the coming session.”

Walsh serves as the Ranking Republican on the House Early Learning and Human Services Committee, which considers policies related to early learning, youth services, family counseling, developmental disabilities and other human services. Each year the club supports legislators who, during recent sessions, sponsor legislation supportive of the clubs' goals.

“Representative Walsh has proven herself to be a champion for youth and families, especially efforts to enhance early learning and youth services like Boys and Girls Clubs,” said Matthew Watrous, executive director of the Boys and Girls Clubs Washington State Association. “Her constituents are lucky to have her representing them and we appreciate her leadership in Olympia.”

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Washington's mission is to enable all young people, especially at-risk children, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

The 2014 legislative session adjourned March 13. The 2015 legislative session will begin January 12.
