Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The 2014 legislative session kicked off in Olympia today. This year’s session is scheduled for 60 days, and I’m optimistic we can complete our work on time.
Not only are we anxious to do our work and go home, but the state is expected to bring in slightly more in tax revenues than originally projected. For the first time since 2008 we have a small budget surplus. This doesn’t mean it is time to open up the state’s checkbook and go crazy, but it does mean that making any needed minor adjustments will be easier. I believe any additional funding should be used to fund education priorities and our state’s pension obligations.

I always want to hear from you, the people I represent, in order to get a pulse for what issues are important to you and where you stand on issues. I invite you to join my seatmate Rep. Terry Nealey and I as we host a telephone town hall early in session so we can represent you most effectively. This is a great chance for me to hear from you and for you to talk directly with me from the comfort of your own home! The event will take place Monday, Jan. 27 at 6:30 p.m. At any time during the hour-long live event you can join us by calling toll-free (800) 213-8596. To ask us a question, simply press * (star/asterisk) on your phone. I hope to hear from many of you!
This year I continue to serve on three House committees: Early Learning and Human Services (where I am the ranking Republican); Higher Education; and Technology and Economic Development. These continue to be a great fit for me to represent our district.
As the session progresses, I will keep you updated on the issues being discussed here so I can get feedback from you. Please forward this e-mail to friends, family and colleagues and encourage them to sign up for these updates, too.
Please feel free to contact my office anytime with questions, concerns or suggestions – it is my job to serve you and it’s a great honor.
Sincerely,

Maureen Walsh
